The Interceptor

The Interceptor is a wireless-wired network tap
Simply put when placed in-line between a target and host on a network, such as a PC and switch, all network traffic in between is retransmitted over a special wireless link.
Using the Interceptor is easy. Simply plug in a network cable from your victim to the Interceptor, then the Interceptor and the rest of the network. Plug in the power and in just a minute you’re all set — the victim PC doesn’t know the Interceptor is there and you’re ready to connect and eavesdrop from a safe and convenient distance via WiFi.
Small and easily hidden it can be disguised as a network print adapter or placed behind a network wall plate.
Eavesdropping on the network traffic can be accomplished in Windows or Linux using the included software. The basic process is 1) connect to Interceptor via wireless 2) configure your wireless network card for a static IP address 3) run the Interceptor startup script, and finally 4) fire up your favorite network sniffing program (such as Wireshark), point it at the newly created VPN tunnel and watch the packets flow.
The Interceptor is passive and doesn’t affect packet time-to-live or latency, thus making it difficult to detect. If you’re savvy you can even switch the Interceptor into active mode and take advantage of a network from the inside out after hours.
If you’re into homebrew and open source we encourage you to build an Interceptor from scratch. The code, courtesy of Robin Wood is freely available. Support can be found in our community forums. But if you would rather purchase one ready to go out of the box they are available here.
The Interceptor is a joint project between Darren Kitchen of Hak5 and Robin Wood of Digininja.org. Together we brainstorm, build, test, and promote hacking devices. We’re always looking for the next hardware to hack and in order to fund our research and development wishes we have made the Interceptor available commercially. Profits go toward our hardware hacking fund.
