2250 Kilometer round trip

February 28, 2006

I’ve just returned from a trip to Toronto and already I’m missing the T.O. Thankfully I drove back with a trunk full of Canada’s finest Hops and Barley. I did two segments on Call for Help, episodes 340 and 344 which will air March 10th and 23rd respectively, and one live episode of The War Room with Jenn Cutter.

So back in the states and ready for action, Wess, Alli and I are shooting the last segments of Hak.5 episode 8. We hope you’ll join us for the regular online release party on March 5th in #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca. We’re working on setting up a LAN (Or would that be WAN?) party & VOIP madness that night. I’ll keep you posted on game, servers, etc when I get the deets so prepare for a good old fashion Hak.5 fragfest.

As for the forums… FileFarmer has still not responded and I think it may be time to fold our cards. I’m not giving up on retrieving our database but at this point I feel the community has been disrupted for too long and if starting from scratch is what we have to do, we’ll just have to bite the bullet and do it. On that note if you’ve got forum software suggestions other than phpBB I’d love to hear them.

Take care all,
–Darren

We use vBulletin over at videopimp.org and it seems pretty nice. we used to use invision board prior, vBulletin though costs from what ive been told. Most/all non profit groups I know use IPB Invision Power Board.

I think you guys should just bite the bullet and start from scratch. It looks like filefarmer isn’t going to come through anytime soon. And I know you guys don’t want to let us Hak.5 fans wait too long. We might have withdraw syptoms starting soon. So do what you have to do get things done.

Yes start from scratch, so what i’ll register again with the same nick. And who reads old stories anyways (or someone will make duplicates)

    Best of lucks. Bonlebon

How about Fusion BB http://www.fusionbb.com/ ? — Leo Laporte uses it on his site and it seems like it can handle a lot of users.

Hi guys, I enjoy your shows very much.

Although I wasn’t a user of the forums, I can recommend something better than phpbb.

    http://www.simplemachines.org/

It’s a very nice forum system which is free and much better than phpbb. As an fyi it’s what they use as forums for joomla.org which has like 24471 users….

vbulletin seems nice to use are is very feature rich stright off altho phpbb can be modded lots and also can be skinned very well. eather way how long till they are up ;) also any chance of getting the show notes listed on another page for now?

The main forum I frequent uses Invision Power Boards. It’s not free, but it’s pretty robust… and it’s (sorta) compatible with phpBB databases (sorta).

    Something Ajax-y would be cool

    Hey, something’s awake at http://www.hak5.tv :)
No forum on there yet, but we’ve got a live one, captain!

Good catch! It’s not taking my admin login yet but it’s a good sign.

Hey guys, sorry to hear about the forums. Starting over might be for the best, though. I suggest you check out SMF from simplemachines.org

    BTW … You guys rock!

I’ve been a long-time user of phpBB for quite a few years, and honestly, still like to use it. However, I’m also looking into the Simple Machines forum (http://www.simplemachines.org) as well, as I’ve heard a lot of good buzz about them. Honestly though, that means another learning curve to get them up and running for yourselves.

Was the problem with the old forums a result of using phpBB, or just a crapped-out server? Don’t be so quick to toss out the baby with the bathwater just yet. Regardless, hang in there, and keep on swingin’!

  21. Administrator on March 2nd, 2006 10:33 pm

The issue is that the ISP hosting hak5.tv crapped out on us and hasn’t brought our domain back online for almost 3 weeks now. That’s absurd.

At least the domain is resolving to an apache page right now, which is better than nothing but still no FTP or admin panel access. Considering this new development I’ll wait a little longer before giving up on them and starting from scratch.

I’ll put in my vote to stick with phpBB. I’ve posted in pretty much every type of forum, and am most comfortable with phpBB.

  23. LuckyPhil on March 3rd, 2006 2:28 am

Well hak5.tv and alifirekat.com both came alive at the same time.
Great sign, i just hope and pray to the flying spaghetti monster the data’s safe and sound…
come join us on /server irc.techphile.ca in #hak5 NOW… or i’ll rip your bloody ears off!

http://punbb.org -> great forum script. I use it all the time.

  26. Andi on March 4th, 2006 3:36 pm

Yep, I would also recommend PunBB, it’s very very fast and clean.

You should take a look at IAMBS, the software they use at http://www.houseofbugs.com . Email timon@codelsve.com about it. It’s by far the best messageboard software I have ever used.
