Hi Wes, many thanks for the mod for the POE like thing for the linksys router, how ever it does not work over LONG lenghs of cable it works over short cable but i have a cable that spans round my house and connected the power to the cable upstairs and wanted the router way down stairs and it did not turn on, i made the same mod to a slighty shorter cable and it worked fine.

Many THanks for this mod Gr8 idea and i have used it on short cable, but no good for long cable..

Keep up the good work tho. :-)

Wes, what you are actualy doing is power over Cat5 cable. Not power over ethernet(PoE)! Please do not call this power over ethernet. In fact, it is better to avoid this mod.

Power over ethernet is 48 volts DC, no 12 like your Linksys. Also, PoE uses special circuitry to probe a device and determine if it is PoE or not BEFORE turning on the 48 volts and, most importantly, the amps.

The issue is that when you call your mod PoE someone will likely make the mistake of plugging in the customized Cat5 cable with 12 power supply into a true PoE device like a phone and it will either damage the phone or place too much load on the wallwart (power supply), resulting in a potential fire situation or a bricked $300 IP phone.

I understand the need or desire to perform this hack but, the modified cable should be clearly and accurately labeled and no one should refer to it as PoE. Instead, just call it a power cable or something similar to denote the fact that it is hot.

OK,
Dont know how much you know about this...
But would consider abit of knowledge on the differences of Short wave, midband and WIDEBAND..broadcasting..

Insted of useing a narrow band to broadcast on, Broadcast on a WIDE band to cover better, and send MORE data..
To many are people dont know about Wideband.

Great episode.

I thought when you said you were going to make the WRT54G a PoE device, you meant that you were going to make the hub part a PoE device. I got really confused when you started soldiering the WAN port.

It got me thinking though, could you turn the hub part of your router into a PoE hub? *cough* mod suggestion *cough*

Me too. Although I was able to download the .mp4 file, it was just a 99mb file though, that wouldn't even run.
