2×02 complete

August 30, 2006

We’ve just wrapped up post production on episode 2×02. We’re leaving tonight for Toronto, Canada to shoot segments for Call for Help and Hak5 episode 2×03. We should be back this Sunday or Monday, in time to release this episode on the 5th. I hope you’ll join us in #hak5 on irc.hak5.org for the release party then. We’ll also be throwing a semi-formal cocktail party on the 9th so if you’re in town and want to dress up to get down drop me a line.

Wess and power tools, you just can’t go wrong.

Alli’s kooky as usual. This month she’s been getting addicted to using Photoshop with a Wacom tablet.

Fresh out of the E.R. Darren comes at us with some nifty embedded BSD goodness, only slightly loopy

Thanks for the Tea Melodic and TX!

2×02 underway

August 20, 2006

Last night was the first day of shooting for 2×02 and we’re loving the little set upgrade. We spent a lot of time in the labs cooking up some killer segments so I’m sure everyone thirsting for Linux, BSD, and all around hackery will really enjoy what we’ve got in store for you.

LAN Party Wrapup

August 19, 2006

So it turns out that Battlefield 2 servers work better with unfried motherboards. Damn. Who knew? So yeah, we ran into a little glitch last night for the LAN party. We’ve rescheduled the event for Thursday, August 24th at 9:00 PM EDT (-5 GMT).

I apologize to everyone who stayed up to play some BF2 with us. Instead we kicked it old-school and played some Unreal Tournament classic. Thanks to everyone who turned out last night, we had a blast.

Props to the HPBs who came out to frag

Computer America downloads

August 1, 2006

Last night Wess and I were on Computer America with Carey Holzman. We had a great time and even had the opportunity to frag with him on the Hak5 Unreal Tournament server after the show. Thanks to everyone that called in and played some capture the flag with us, especially the awesome support on the red team :). I’ve chopped up the audio and offer it here, sans commercials, in both mp3 and ogg goodness. Enjoy.

The_Spleen (Carey Holzman) rocked the sniper rifle and came out in second place on the red team. We kicked butt. Better luck next time blue team ;).

Episode 2×01 Production Notes 1

July 12, 2006

Whoa, am I really writing production notes already? Man those two months “off” went by quick. Though I’m sure you’re all eagerly anticipating the next release. Season two is officially off the ground with 1/3rd of the season premier complete. The rest of the segments are in pre-production and we seem to be on schedule for an amazing release on August 5th.

What do a Mac, a Gentoo box, and a Windows machine all have in common?

Wess and guest Limin Li

Ok well that’s all for now. Stay tuned for a Hak. 5 event announcement by the end of the week.

Hak5 Update

July 6, 2006

Call for Help
Last weekend we were in Toronto, Canada to guest on Call for Help and had an absolute blast. Pictures are on flickr from Steven Saylor, Sean Carruthers and Darren Kitchen. Look out for us on Call for Help episode #403 and #407 this month. Episodes are now available online.

4th of July Party
The Hak.4th Independence Day party was a blast. Thanks to everyone who turned up for the event both in house and online. We’ll try to get video of the pyrotechnics up on the forums soon. Pictures are on flickr from Limin Li and Mubix as well as other tid bits in the forums.

DVD & Season Two
The DVD is almost ready to go so keep your bit torrent clients ready and stay tuned this month for announcements on that. Also, I’d like to clear up some confusion about our release schedule. We did 10 months on and took 2 months off, which is why there weren’t shows on June or July 5th. Now that our batteries are fully recharged we’re full speed ahead on Season 2 Episode 1 production, to be released on August 5th. We’ll have production notes updates throughout the month.

LAN Party
The Hak.5 LAN party game for the month is Battle Field 2. The server can be found at game.hak5.org. We would like to thank everyone at EVOLANS.com for setting us up with the awesome game server just for the Hak.5 community. Wess and I have been getting a handle on the game and I’ve got to say so far if you need someone on your team to flip a hellicopter upside down and crash into a hill, I’m your man. We’ll have tournament dates posted later.

IRC
We’ve recently added some redundancy to our IRC servers. Thanks go to Mubix, Owine, and Brainkill for making it so rock solid. You can join us in #hak5 on irc.hak5.org.

Cheers,
—Darren

Whatchya doin on the 4th?

June 27, 2006

In the NOVA, Richmond, or Hampton Roads areas? Wanna blow stuff up on the 4th with Hak5? We’re throwing an Independence Day party at Hak5 Studios, Williamsburg Virginia (Google Map). Email darren@hak5.org for directions if you’re interested.

DJ Limin Li will be spinning at the event. We will webcast it for those that can’t make it.

Get off my lawn

June 21, 2006

What are you doing here? We don’t have anything to announce until this weekend. Go watch Pure Pwnage, the new episode is out.

Darren Kitchen and Jenn Cutter on Computer America tonight

June 9, 2006

Darren Kitchen and Jenn Cutter of OpenAlpha.tv will be on the Computer America radio show tonight at 10:00 PM Eastern.

This is a call in show so feel free to give us a ring at 1 (866) 606-8255. The Internet stream can be found here and the chat room for the event is here.

IRC UPDATE: We had an IRC hiccup but we’re back on another server for the night. irc.hak5.org is now working

The War Room series finale

May 26, 2006

Many of you may know that aside from Hak.5 I’ve been involved in another podcasting venture over at mmoradio.com with Jenn Cutter of OpenAlpha.tv. The show, The War Room, was all about Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. I’m both happy and sad to say that the show has officially come to an end. I’ve canceled my WoW account, which means I’ll have much more time for Hak.5 now. I will however miss doing the live radio show with Jenn, and questing with the most awesome fans on the Stormrage realm.

Unfortunately as soon as the show ended last Sunday MMORadio.com pulled the plug on The War Room website, forums, and feed. It’s been a fun four months but for those who weren’t lucky enough to catch the live show there won’t be a series finale sync’d to their ipods this week. So thanks to our talented producer I’ve gathered all 13 episodes of The War Room and uploaded them here for your enjoyment.

It’s been a blast working with co-host Jenn Cutter and producer Stephen Saylor and I’m positive as this chapter ends new colaborative projects will emerge. But we’ll have to wait a bit longer for any announcements about that.

So as we end The War Room I propose a toast to all WoW players and invite you to enjoy the series finale available here.

On another note, if you’re ready for some twitch action shooting with Wess and I, the Hak.5 LAN party will be going on this Saturday with Counter-Strike: Source. Details in the post below.

—Darren

Just a reminder that this Saturday we will be holding our second Hak.5 LAN party. This will be the last LAN party with Counter-Strike: Source until the next rotation. So this is your chance to equip a Desert Eagle & M4A1 and take on Wess and Darren in Dust, Office, Assault, and all the other fun maps.

Computer America audio now available

May 20, 2006

Last night the Computer America interview went well. We chatted for the first hour about Hak.5 in general as well as some things to look forward to in season two. The bit I said about Alli and Evil Server were just to throw you off track so don’t start speculating :). I hung around for the second hour when Alex Albrecht from Revision3 joined in and we had a blast talking all things podcasting, MMO, and E3.

The audio is available without commercials in both MP3 and OGG here:

Hour 1 MP3
Hour 2 MP3
Hour 1 OGG
Hour 2 OGG

Thanks go to Carey Holtzman and Computer America for having us on, the fans for calling in, and Alex Albrecht for being cool (especially with the diggnation and the broken parodies).

May 18, 2006

Hak.5 will be on the Computer America radio show with Craig Crossman and Carey Holzman this Friday night (May 19th) at 10pm EST (-5 GMT)/ 7pm PST. Computer America is “America’s longest-running nationally syndicated radio talk show about computers”. You can tune into the radio broadcast if it’s carried in your area or listen to the Internet stream.

I’ll make the MP3 available here on Saturday. This is a live call in show so feel free to join in!

LAN Party May 27th

May 17, 2006

The Counter-Strike: Source LAN party scheduled for this Saturday, May 20th has been pushed back to Saturday May 27th due to a scheduling conflict with Wess. Last week he was unable to join the fragfest and it won’t be the same this weekend without him. Hopefully this will give everyone more time to blockout that date and hone their deagle skills.

WB Forums

May 17, 2006

Good news: The forums are back! Bad news: Disabling the forums didn’t lower CPU usage.

I know it’s PHP that’s using to many cycles and I’ve ruled out wordpress and phpbb so the only thing left is *gasp* blogtorrent. I’m tweaking it now but if I don’t see improvement by tomorrow I’ll be forced to disable the BitTorrent tracker. I don’t mind moving the tracker offsite or outsourcing it if that’s what its going to take to keep things running smoothly. Suggestions very much appreciated.

Forums will BRB

May 16, 2006

The forums have been disabled for 24 hours as I try to isolate a CPU usage problem. Until then feel free top drop by #hak5 on irc.hak5.org.

Oh yeah, and the episodes and sketches pages have been updated. I think they look much cleaner.

–Darren

Hak5.org gets a facelift

May 15, 2006

The much needed website upgrades are currently taking place. The normal drill applies, if you notice a broken link I would love to hear about it. I’m currently working on making the episodes page and sketches page much cleaner. Feedback on the new template is welcome. It’s a challenge putting this all together as there are 15 unique elements of the website that need to fit somewhere. Some have pointed out that elements such as the links or donations get lost in the mix and that’s something I’m trying to figure out how to deal with.

I hope your week is filled with technolust,
–Darren

LAN PARTY

Our first Hak.5 LAN Party was a grand success. The three hour Counter-Strike: Source marathon was a blast and I’ve got to give mad props to Rob Fuller for the impromptu live in-game commentary shoutcast stream. Now if you weren’t able to make our pilot fragfest don’t worry, we’ll be doing it again next week. Details:

Announcements

May 3, 2006

There are a lot of great happenings here at Hak.5 so I’m going to take a few moments to run through the highlights.

T-Shirts by Jinx

This is something that we’ve been very excited about for a long time and the day has finally come. Our new T-shirts are now available at www.jinx.com/hak5/ and they look great! With a big bold Hak.5 logo on the front and “Trust Your Technolust” across the back they really make a statement. The quality is leaps and bounds above those old white tees and they’re less expensive too! We can’t wait to get our first email with a picture of you wearing one. Score one for Hak.5 fans & thanks to Jason over at Jinx for making that happen.

DivX Movies

We’re also happy to announce that we’re now featured on the DivX.com site in their new Video Blogs section. Best part is you can now watch all our episodes either on the page streaming, or download them to disk. This is great news considering that prior to this announcement direct downloads of the xvid version of our back catalog (episodes 1-5) have been offline. So if you’ve missed some of the older episodes and want to catch up you can now grab a copy over at divx.com! Thank go to Ben at DivX.

Bit-Tech and Wired

We’re excited to be recognized in such awesome ‘zines both online and in print. The Wired article is now available online (We’re on page 2). You can also check out the write-up on Bit-Tech.net’s May 2nd article, IPTV Decoded (Page 3).

According to Wired we’re “ubergeeks” and Bit-Tech claims we’re “hacking gurus”. As long as we’re not labeled “nerds” we’re A-OK ;-)! Thanks guys!

G4 TechTV: Call for Help

We just recently got back from a trip up to Toronto where we shot three segments on Call for Help. Keep an eye out for Wess & Darren on episodes 370 and 374 this month!

Episode 10
It’s mad crunch time. We lost a week to my vacation at the beginning of the month, a weekend to weather, and a weekend to our trip to Toronto. We’re behind schedule and the editing box is on its last leg. It’ll be getting a reformat as soon as this episode is out the door. That said we’re burning the midnight oil to get this puppy online. Officially ep10 is our season finale which implies that we’ll be taking a break. If we even do take a break and how long said break will be is still up in the air. But some things are for sure. Once ep10 releases our focus will be on a website redesign & DVD release. Stay tuned for announcements on those in the coming month.

And most importantly, thank you everyone who has been so supportive of our dream. In our first year we’ve made some big steps and we’ve very proud to have such an amazing fan base. Whether you’ve been with us since episode 1 or just discovered us I’d like to say thank you for your support. Everything from seeding the torrents to donating to watching the show really means a lot to us.

Hak.5 gets WIRED

April 26, 2006

First off I want to thank everyone that made the transition to the new IRC server, irc.hak5.org, successful. And thanks to everyone that’s helped us “beta test” the game server and offered suggestions. I’m sure over the coming months we’ll get to all the games that have been suggested (with the exception of multi-player-minesweeper ;))

And now the awesome big news. Hak.5 is being featured in the May issue of Wired Magazine! That rocks! Check us out on page 128 where we’re called “An appealing cast of übergeeks” with a “Must See!” vodcast. Thanks Wired!

Episode 10 production is going good, yet slow. Maybe it’s the senioritis kicking in since we’re working on the season finale. Last weekend we got rained out, hindering our ability to shoot the scheduled segment. So we got some inspiration and decided to shoot this little Firefox ad with Evil Server. IRC-goers can find the secret URL to the B-Roll on that ;).

We’re in Toronto Thursday - Sunday this week shooting some Hak.5 stuff and doing a few segments for upcoming episodes of Call for Help. Kick me an email if your in town and down for a Rickard’s Red :).

Trüsten Der Technölusten,
–Darren

IRC & Game Server

April 11, 2006

Good news all! We now have a new and more stable IRC server at irc.hak5.org. We welcome everyone to join us in #hak5. We’ll be slowly making the transition over the week. Thanks go to Oliver Wine for making that happen smoothly.

And in other awesome news, we’re currently beta-testing a new Hak.5 game server — sponsored by EVOLANS.com. We’re currently testing Counter-Strike: Source. You can join us on the server at game.hak5.org (password is hak5). Kick us an email or leave a comment about your experience, we want to get everything worked out before episode 10 release on May 5th.

Thanks to everyone that has been so supportive bringing these new Hak5 services online.

–Darren

Spring Cleaning

April 9, 2006

Good news and bad news. The good news: the torrent RSS feeds have been fixed. The bad news: our IRC server is dieing a slow and painful death. We’re currently evaluating options and hope to move to a new IRC server by the end of the week. We’ll have details here when that takes place. If you have suggestions for IRC hosting that won’t break the bank we’d love to hear from you.

In other news, we’re evaluating several gamehosting companies and hope to have a Hak5 gameserver soon. We’ll most likely rotate the game every month and schedule an event where the Hak.5 crew will join in the fragging pleasure.

Thank you everyone for the awesome feedback on episode 9, your continued support means so much to us.

–Darren

Hak.5 to be featured on Torrent pilot tonight!

April 6, 2006

Tonight Hak.5 will be featured on the pilot episode Torrent, a new show on G4TechTV. From the website “Torrent is a weekly one-hour television Internet-culture show for tech-savvy audiences looking for unique first-person pop-tech stories from around the world“, however Torrent’s host Amber Mac does a better job of summing it up on her blog.

The pilot episode airs on G4TechTV in Canada at 8:00 PM EST and more information can be found at Torrent’s official site.

We’re excited to be featured on such a unique community driven show and hope everyone has a chance to check it out.

Episode 9 - Production Notes 2

April 3, 2006

Is the 5th really coming up that fast? Yikes! Render farm to full speed! We just wrapped shooting what we believe to be our best episode ever and can’t wait to release it. Videora and VirtualDub are standing by ready to encode the xvid and mp4 as soon as I finish some final touches. Running time is creeping up on an hour so be prepared for a power packed episode.

Now I know we’ve made a promise from day one to release quality tech/entertainment on the 5th of each month, but I’ll level with ya. The 5th is going to be a crazy day for us for many reasons and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. So we’ll be releasing on the 4th! I don’t have a firm time since I’ve got a business trip that day so expect it some time that evening (EST, -5 GMT of course). For the most up to date happenings head over to the IRC chat in #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca. That’s where we’ll be holding the usual release party. If you’ve never joined us in chat for a release party before tomorrow is a perfect time to join the crew and see how much crazy fun it is.

Now without further adieu, production note screenshots hot off the timeline.

Rob Fuller joins Wess with a fantastic segment and a sexy laptop.

Back in the control room things go very wrong. Wess and Darren plan corrective action.

Wess, Jenn, and Darren all remind you to trust your technolust. It’s like using the force!

Thank you everyone for your continued support, it has pushed us to make the show better with every pixel. We hope to see you on the 4th for a rockin’ release!

–Darren

Episode 9 - Production Notes 1

March 25, 2006

Yes, you read the title correctly. I’m actually doing production notes. Been a while eh? Yes, I did just write eh. I blame our special guest this episode. So far everything is running smoothly. I’m very happy with the way this episode is coming out. We have some really solid segments either in the can or on the deck, and our sketch shoot tomorrow is going to be so much fun. We’re also happy to be harboring a Canadian in studio. Yes, the clever Jenn Cutter of OpenAlpha is joining us for some Hak.5 and OA fun, and she brought Guitar Hero. Wess has been practicing his micro to no end, it’s amazing he’s available to direct a segment at all ;).

Jenn Cutter and Tux school Wess

I love the image quality of Jenn’s Canon XL2, but the green lens flare has got to go!

Can’t wait ’till the 5th!

The Computer America Disaster

March 12, 2006

Friday night I was on the Computer America show to talk about Hak.5. Unfortunately the show was plagued with technical difficulties throughout the night. Half hour in the board operator could not get me on as the phone network was down in their area. Finally, co-host Carey Holzman calls me from his cell phone, puts it on speaker, and holds it next to the mic. It works slightly better than tin cans and string.

Download the train wreck here: Hour 1 MP3, Hour 2 MP3.

We’ve been invited on again and I’m sure next time it won’t sound so horrible.

Hak.5 Live on Computer America Radio tonight!

March 10, 2006

Hak.5 will be on the Computer America radio show with Craig Crossman and Carey Holzman for at 10pm EST (-5 GMT)/ 7pm PST. Computer America is “America’s longest-running nationally syndicated radio talk show about computers”. You can tune into the radio broadcast if it’s carried in your area or listen to the Internet stream.

I’ll make the MP3 available here tomorrow. This is a live call in show so feel free to join in!

eBay auction to benefit the EFF

March 7, 2006

Last month we got very excited to find that issue #648 of the Amazing Adventures of Superman included references to TWiT, CommandN, and Hak.5.

On a recent trip to Toronto for Call for Help the infamous Sean Carruthers of Lab Rats suggested that we autograph a number of copies to benefit the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

A limited edition eight copies have been autographed by Amber MacArthur (CommandN, TWiT), Darren Kitchen (Hak.5), Leo Laporte (TWiT), Mike Lazazzera (commandN), Wess Tobler (Hak.5)

The top three bidders will get theirs also autographed by Hak.5’s Alli and a special TWiT Pocket Protector autographed by Kevin Rose, Patrick Norton, the Woz, and Leo Laporte plus bonus TWiT swag.

All the money raised will go to benefit the Electronic Frontier Foundation in their ongoing fight to protect your rights online.

Head over to ebay and bid for this unique podcast collectible!

PS: I had so much fun photoshopping Sean Carruther’s original image that I couldn’t resist turning it into a desktop wallpaper. 1024×768, 1280×1024

Forums back online

March 7, 2006

After waiting for so long for the ISP hosting our forums to come back online we can’t wait any longer. The forums are back, hosted at dreamhost. They rock and I’ve got nothing but nice things to say about them. Unfortunately we had to start from scratch so I hope you’ll understand as we rebuild the forums community.

–Darren

It’s the 5th!

March 5, 2006

It’s the 5th! Hak.5 episode 8 will be released today. Come join the party in #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca!

2250 Kilometer round trip

February 28, 2006

I’ve just returned from a trip to Toronto and already I’m missing the T.O. Thankfully I drove back with a trunk full of Canada’s finest Hops and Barley. I did two segments on Call for Help, episodes 340 and 344 which will air March 10th and 23rd respectively, and one live episode of The War Room with Jenn Cutter.

So back in the states and ready for action, Wess, Alli and I are shooting the last segments of Hak.5 episode 8. We hope you’ll join us for the regular online release party on March 5th in #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca. We’re working on setting up a LAN (Or would that be WAN?) party & VOIP madness that night. I’ll keep you posted on game, servers, etc when I get the deets so prepare for a good old fashion Hak.5 fragfest.

As for the forums… FileFarmer has still not responded and I think it may be time to fold our cards. I’m not giving up on retrieving our database but at this point I feel the community has been disrupted for too long and if starting from scratch is what we have to do, we’ll just have to bite the bullet and do it. On that note if you’ve got forum software suggestions other than phpBB I’d love to hear them.

Take care all,
–Darren

Forums update

February 21, 2006

After many many emails, support tickets, and voicemails the ISP hosting our Forums, Web Chat, and direct download links for episodes 1 - 5.5 have contacted us. They are aware of the problem (Finally, it only took over a week of bugging them) however they aren’t sure where the problem stems. They have not been helpful at all. At this time I’m just looking forward to getting access to our server so that I can download our PHPBB database and move it to another server. Libsyn has done a great job of hosting our direct downloads and I will be moving episodes 1 - 5.5 there.

FileFarmer, the ISP in question, has not given me an ETA on the server being back up. They claim they’ve got green lights on all of their servers. If you read the forums over at filefarmer.com you’ll see that we’re not the only ones having problems with their service.

I’ve got to say up until lately their service has been great. They were willing to work with our enormous bandwidth requirements and were generally responsive. That level of support has obviously changed. I’ll continue to hound them about the server. If you’d like to give them a little nudge, their email address is filefarmer@gmail.com

I do not want to use the backup copy of the forums DB I have locally since its outdated. Several posts and user accounts would be lost if I were to restore from this backup on another server.

I apologize for the inconvenience. I hope you understand as we work through this bump.

–Darren

Forums status

February 10, 2006

We are aware that our forums and web chat are down. Both of those are hosted on our Hak5.tv domain. I have contacted the ISP and that server should be up ASAP. Until then we apologize for the inconvenience.

Keep trusting that technolust,

–Darren

Ep 7 pre-post

February 4, 2006

We hope everyone is as excited about the imminent release as we are! We’ll be hanging out in #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca as always for a killer release party. Oh, and supposedly there’s something else happening on the 5th involving pig skin… whatever ;)

TWiT, Hak.5 & CommandN meet the Man of Steel

January 29, 2006

What better birthday gift could my dear co-host Wess ask for than an appearance in DC’s Adventures of Superman? Yes the above picture is not photoshopped, issue #648 features a cell with a trio of podcast loving metropolis thugs sporting none other than CommandN, TWiT, and Hak.5 attire. For those counting this is the second to the last issue of Adventures of Superman before the conclusion of the Infinite Crisis storyline. Issue #650 the comic will be renamed to just “Superman”. It is quite amazing to be featured in the 67 year running comic book of the super hero legend. Hats off to our DC admirer.

Tonight we wrapped up shooting of episode 7 and post production is well underway. As always we’re excited about the release next week, as well as some spiffy announcements to come ;).

New RSS feeds and Hak.5 on iTunes

January 10, 2006

Great news everyone, after searching nearly everywhere on the Internet we have finally found a suitable host for our video files. The best part is you can now subscribe to Hak.5 on iTunes!

This also means that the RSS feeds have changed. If you are subscribed to the H.264 torrent/direct or the Xvid torrent/direct please update your podcatching application by using the new feed links on the top left of the page.

Hopefully this will be the last time the feeds change since we’re using feedburner now. If you had trouble subscribing to the feeds before (we had some complaints about podcatching apps trying to download the .php file) try again now and let us know your experience.

And finally I would like to say hello to all the new viewers who have found us from Call for Help. It was a blast being on CFH and I hope you all enjoy Hak.5.

Pre Episode 6 Update

Episode 6 is well on its way to release. We are planning on releasing no later than (6PM EST / 11PM GMT). Possibly sooner, latest news will be in the IRC channel. We have done minimum configuration of our new dedicated server and hopefully today’s first test of its capabilities will go well. If your direct download experience is sub par please let us know by comment or email. We will probably use the current bit-torrent tracker but that will soon change, along with nice new RSS feeds for iTunes subscriptions.

While you’re waiting for episode 6 you may want to check out some CES footage from our friends at Labrats and WASD.tv.

Remember, as always the pre and post launch party will be in #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca. Supposedly there is a team-speak party brewing which we may make an appearance on as well. Should be a riot.
