Hak5 joins Revision3

August 14, 2008

San Francisco, CA – August 14, 2008 – Revision3, the TV network for the Internet generation, today announced that it is bringing Hak5, a home-grown hit series fusing underground culture and mainstream IT, to its weekly lineup of pop culture shows. Covering everything from network security, open source software and forensics, to Do It Yourself projects and the homebrew scene, new episodes of Hak5 will launch September 8th on Revision3 at www.revision3.com/hak5.

“Back when we launched Tekzilla, a few fans accused us of ripping off Hak5’s brick-encrusted set. The correlation was spurious, but rather than alienate the industry’s top hackers, we decided it would be better to team up with Hak5 instead,” said Jim Louderback, CEO, Revision3. “Seriously, it’s great to have such a hardcore hacking show round out our coverage for tech fanatics everywhere. And given the street cred of the Hak5 team, I’d rather have them with us than against us.”

Hak5, known as a hybrid of technology and geek humor, has been put together by a band of IT ninjas, security professionals and gaming enthusiasts since 2005. Within its first few months on-air the show had become a hit among tech enthusiasts as well as mainstream media, and currently attracts fans from around the world.

“With this partnership we intend to focus solely on delivering the kind of unique and high quality content our loyal viewers have come to expect,” said Darren Kitchen, Producer, Hak5. “We’re excited to become a part of Revision3’s great lineup of shows – and to extend our devoted audience in the near future.”

The first episode of Hak5 will launch on Revision3 on September 8, 2008. Episodes will be hosted by Darren Kitchen, Matt Lestock and Shannon Morse and will appear regularly every Wednesday at 12 p.m. EST.
About Revision3
Revision3 is the first media company that gets it. Born from the Internet, Revision3 is a TV network for the web, creating and producing shows for a new audience: passionate fans who want to watch shows about technology, modern culture and music that entertain, educate and help to expand their life experiences.
The company was founded in 2005 by technology visionaries Kevin Rose, Jay Adelson and David Prager, because they couldn’t find anything they wanted to watch on traditional television. The company is now led by Internet TV pioneer Jim Louderback. With more than 35 million downloads to date (and 4.2 million per month), Revision3’s programs can be found everywhere from Revision3 to a wide range of platforms, including Apple iTunes, Hulu, DivX, YouTube and PyroTV. Shows can be watched on any device, from a cell phone to an Apple Nano, on a computer or a TV.

Awesome news. I love Hak5, Tekzilla, and Systm. I hope you guys start getting paychecks soon.

    Good news I hate Rev3….

    </3 Hak5

  3. asd on August 14th, 2008 4:18 pm

I hope this will not prevent borderline legal hacks and whatnot, Rev3 is a “real company” and all

  4. matt on August 14th, 2008 4:34 pm

Sounds like a good match. Congrats

  5. david on August 14th, 2008 4:51 pm

i see the show going downhill from here on.

“Episodes will be hosted by Darren Kitchen, Matt Lestock and Shannon Morse and will appear regularly every Wednesday at 12 p.m. EST.”

What about Wess, Alli, Paul, and everyone else? Will they be involved too at least?

  7. Matt Lestock on August 14th, 2008 6:20 pm

    Wess has resigned - http://wesstobler.vox.com
    Ali is going to school
Paul is our producer, he’s chained to the console.

@david, well we’re sorry you feel that way, hope you tune in at least once or twice to see if you’re right.

Rev3 has some great content. It is great to see this show become even bigger!

  9. stebe on August 14th, 2008 9:07 pm

As soon I as I saw the video last week I was almost instantly sure it was a revision3 partnership.

I like revision3 and hak5 so I hope it all turns out well.

  10. DigiP on August 14th, 2008 10:30 pm

I don’t know whether to be sad or happy about this. It’s great for Hak5 to get the credit they deserve, but I’m not sure how Revision 3 really compares to Hak5.

I seriously hope the guys are being taken care of substantially by Rev3, as they deserve nothing less than the best for their years of hard work and dedication to the show and it’s community!

Just want to say that I wish you guys the best of luck with this, but I have my reservations about how Rev3 will effect all of us. Hopefully they don’t try to change anything or take ownership of anything Hak5.

  11. Ads on August 14th, 2008 10:40 pm

I think it’s good, Hak5 will get more exposure being on Rev3. Their other shows like Diggnation, Systm and Tekzilla pull a lot of views and i think these people would also like Hak5.

  12. JasonT on August 15th, 2008 1:02 am

    Wess has left?!?

The show will seriously not be the same.

    :(

  13. GFRoSTY on August 15th, 2008 3:55 am

Hmm kinda not sure on this one.. Seeing as Rev 3 is a legal company, where does that lie with the heart of what Hak5 does ???

I can see the ‘on the verge if not slightly over’ content of the past not being repeated ?

I’ll be on the Live show, bloody early in the morning for us UK people though !

  14. GFRoSTY on August 15th, 2008 3:59 am

I can’t find ANY reference to HAK5 on the Rev3 website, WTF
Surely as this is now ‘confirmed’, the website people should be updating the Rev 3 site ?

Will ALL of the previous shows be listed at Rev 3 now ?
I am unable to download several of the earlier Season 1/2 shows via itunes for some reason

  15. EckyPro on August 15th, 2008 5:27 am

I liked Hak5 because it was raw and ‘homemade’. I like Rev3 but im not sure if this is a good move. Sure ratings will be up from the exposure but it just wont be the same.

    Half-half about this guys…

  16. brad on August 15th, 2008 5:57 am

hey alex so wrong to say that man i think great stuff they at rev3
    best news

  17. Shannon on August 15th, 2008 5:57 am

Well done guys for putting on a great show for the last few years, I hope to see even greater things from all of you in the future, i am glad to hear hak5 will continue even though it will be different with only half the team.

  18. Soundgarden on August 15th, 2008 6:07 am

Well Well, Teaming up with Pat Norton and the boys can only be good…but what of revison3? From my end Rev3 has picked up all the good shows and presenters who have been there since very early Podcast days. But I have to admit they do seem to move ppl around allot from show to show. But I had a feeling something like this had to happen after you guys/gals tried to turn your Hak5 house into a ARK of Geeknees.

I agree with Eckypro(Ecky Thump) “Rawness” was a good thing…But HD quality and bandwidth, cost and all that…hard to compete with the Leo(Hmmm) and such…Now joining the Gang sounds like the only way to go…New set and all..Keep a good Raine on Fora’s and community…Great News…Now I can rely on a EP being on time…LOL…

  19. Will on August 15th, 2008 6:09 am

Guys, I can appreciate y’all joining the Rev3, and I do regularly watch Tekzilla and Systm.. On the flip side of the coin, I see the direction that Systm has gone over the years, and it’s not really what it used to be. I hope that the same doesn’t happen to Hak5, but chances are I’ll still watch anyway.
Thanks for all the awesome content over the last few years and looking forward to much much more now with Rev3

  20. Matt on August 15th, 2008 7:54 am

We encourage all of you to watch the live show tonight at 9PM EST (-5 GMT) for answers to all of these questions / concerns you have.

noobs will flood the forums now NO!!!!!

  22. Darren on August 15th, 2008 11:21 am

@d Law #76 of the Internet: Noobs happen.

@EckyPro I think you’ll find that Season4 is the rawness of Season1 plus the production quality of Season3.

@GFRoSTY The official press release is at http://revision3.com/blog/2008/08/14/revision3-adds-hak5-program-to-hit-lineup/ and Jim’s blog post about it at http://revision3.com/blog/2008/08/14/revision3-brings-hak5-into-the-fold/

@JasonT We really miss him but the show will continue on just as it has when Harrison, John or Alli left.

@DigiP We’ll continue doing gray/black hat stuff. This deal doesn’t change that.

@david I hope you stick around to find out

  23. hamgrenade on August 15th, 2008 12:18 pm

Freaking awesome. The whole ’special announcement’ thing made me worry.

  24. Sky on August 15th, 2008 12:19 pm

    WooT! WooT!

    Extreme Hak5!

  25. Jalada on August 15th, 2008 1:54 pm

As I have said elsewhere, I’m pleased to see Hak5 going places - fulfilling their dreams of doing it full time and so on. I think it’s important however that Hak5 continue to do what they have always done best, and I hope that they keep that in mind :-)

  26. Dwayne La Rose on August 15th, 2008 6:00 pm

Well It is sad to hear about Ali and Wess leaving but Im happy to hear that you will be going to Rev3. Now that you have rev 3 behind you you can have a bit more or a budget for the show and do some bigger things!

    Good luck!

  27. maq_vega on August 16th, 2008 12:03 am

I think you show is awesome and have know doubt it will continue to bring ‘IT’ to us the fans. It is indeed sad to see various people leave as time goes on but as long as you can keep the same enthusiasim that you put into your previous seasons your new setup with Rev3 will keep me coming back for more. It must be hard keeping up costs for producing the show so it definitley make sense to get some backing, but just remeber the old saying ‘too much of a good thing’ pretty sure Hak5 doesn’t want to be like every other IPTV show out there. Keep IT real!

    Looking forward to S4

  28. FighterHayabusa on August 16th, 2008 2:30 am

AWESOME!!!! Congratulations guys!!!! This is the best news I’ve gotten in ages!

  29. Fonzi on August 16th, 2008 8:38 am

Good luck. Hope you guys keep it raw and real.
    Don’t jump the shark!

  30. TypicalTVNetwork on August 19th, 2008 5:45 am

Well, it appears that revision3’s payroll is getting too high. As with all typical traditional tv networks, when you get a good cast, something has to suffer. I’m not saying the hak5 is going to suffer, however, I have a strong feeling something is going to disappear from the lineup at Revision3. Dare I say, diggnation? and to go a bit further, even perhaps Systm? both to be replaced by hak5, by a cheaper cast.

  31. Adam on August 20th, 2008 8:37 am

    TypicalTV network Maybe

I don’t know the problem is Rev3 is a new company and needs to start serving the niche community. Advertises need to pay for them

Most of the host are part-time or casual. Meaning this isn’t there full-time jobs

  32. Wonkzilla on August 20th, 2008 10:59 am

Not sure what I see for hak5 in the future.

First Wes leaving. He was the show for me.

Secondly having to output something every week adds a lot of stress to the situation

Finally, from what I’ve seen Jim Louderback is a huge douche with no loyalty or taste.

Will I stop watching.. not at first. But we’ll see

  33. Matt on August 20th, 2008 11:54 am

    @Wonkzilla

It’s interesting that you say “Wess was the show” when in the last two seasons he’s done no more than 8 segments in the span of 20 episodes

We would not have entered into an agreement with Rev3 if we felt that putting out weekly content was going to be an issue. On the contrary, we’re absolutely excited about the freedom going weekly offers us.

And I’m not sure where you got your information, but Jim and the entire staff over at revision3 have been amazing. Talking with Jim in person and in conference calls, he has been nothing but excited for us.

While I respect your decision to stop watching eventually, your reasons for doing so before even seeing a new episode, I cannot.

But everyone’s entitled to their opinion right?

  34. wonkzilla on August 20th, 2008 5:25 pm

Let me be clear I am a big fan of the show and hope it succeeds amazingly. Going with Revision3 offers some beg benefits. Maybe I just don’t like change, but I have some concerns.

About the Wes comment: I don’t watch the episodes from beginning to end. I check out each “skit” section? and only watch the ones I am interested in. Sometimes you guys cover things I am not interested. But I end up watching every Wes section.

If you think you are good for a weekly release then that’s cool. More is better.

I have to be cagey on the Jim stuff. I’ve heard things from people who’ve heard things. I hope everything goes great in your dealing with rev3.

“While I respect your decision to stop watching eventually”
I’m confused. Maybe I was unclear. I said I plan on watching

What did I tell you? Look at diggnation 164….where is alex and kevin? hmmm.

  37. TypicalTVNetwork on August 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm

Yes, I know, only for 2-3 minutes, but it has begun…

  38. audey on August 27th, 2008 4:16 am

    DO NOT WANT REV3
will see how it goes, but I hope you guys didn’t sign a long term contract…

    sucks that wess is gone

  39. fitzy on August 27th, 2008 6:51 am

I don’t get why all of you have issues with them joining Rev3… All Rev3 will do for them is market Hak5 (by selling ads), encode each episode, and distrubute each episode. Rev3 doesn’t have any creative control over anything.

I understand why you may not like Rev3 shows, but Hak5 is staying independent.

  40. Jim Louderback on August 28th, 2008 1:40 pm

For anyone who’s worried.. we aren’t telling the Hak5 guys anything at all about what to do or how to do it. We did work with them to create a new graphics package that I hope you’ll like… and we think the show would be even better in HD. But beyond that we’re letting Hak5 be Hak5. The show is great, we’d never bring it on, and then try to change it.

So don’t worry! Hak5 is great, we’re just hoping that together we can help the show reach a wider audience, and bring in more money too.

But let me know if you have a problem with anything that happens - jim AT revision3 DOT com

  41. Shannon on August 28th, 2008 4:33 pm

Jim speaks the truth. Hak5 is still the show ya’ll watch, with some spiffy graphics and new sponsors. We’re still doing the totally pwnage 1337 hacks and mods. Let any of us know what you like and don’t like. I’m just joining the crew, so tell me any constructive critisisms you may have with my own performance as well as our signing with Rev3. We love feedback, good and bad, and we’re making this show for you guys and ladies!!

  42. vanguard on August 29th, 2008 2:32 pm

And a real good show, I have to say ! It is always the danger, that commercials might influence the kind or the content of a show. Maybe to make it more popular to get more visitors or just another kind of visitors. But IMO, I think, if the hak5-team are not agreeeing to this, they are free to quit with Rev3 and making theire own way as before. I think, Rev3 is knowing this option as well, and as Rev3 does not want hak5 to leave, they will not change anything.

So I do not care about any changes in the future.

And I am looking forward to see the next episode here in Germany soon !

    Cheers

    vanguard

    lol good one xD

    wait a min , its not april 1st :O
aww hak5’s going down the tubes :(
aww well it was good while it lasted …

go ahead cash in , way to go corporate …
c’mon you guys used to mock & parody them and now you’re joining the douchebags :( the money cant be THAT good :(

man all good stuff on the web ’s dying :(
    RIP crazy-coderz ,RIP stage6 ,RIP hak5
now just hoping bsodtv will increase in production value and stay alive for a while :(

  44. Shannon on September 1st, 2008 1:29 pm

DLSS read Jim’s responce a few comments up from yours.

  45. Runtime Error on September 1st, 2008 9:22 pm

Hak5 is a great show and so is BSOD. A thing to note is that BSOD has much respect for Patrick Norton and even took the time to interview him (episode 7). Patrick currently hosts at least 2 revision3 series.

If Hak5 ACTUALLY starts selling out and starts becoming a bunch of corporate assholes, then I think everybody should start complaining then not now.

  46. Jason Davis on September 8th, 2008 4:48 pm

The flash video on the rev3 site looks very bad. But other than that congrats I guess on the new acquisition.

  47. Jafo on September 14th, 2008 9:19 am

I’ve seen the first two episodes of Season4 on Rev3 and so far so good. I like seeing you guys working hard to provide great shows as usual. Also, very cool to see Louderback post a comment to all the fans of your show. It shows that his concern is really just the opposite of wanting to change your format, instead wanting to keep it the way it has been, which I feel is very similar to what Rev3 dropped off their lineup with the loss of The Broken (For obvious and understandable reasons I won’t explain a.k.a. Get some n00b lube if you don’t know why). So very happy to see you guys are backed by the best tech media company out there. /Gratz :)

  48. cit-uhh-zen on September 17th, 2008 12:56 pm

I love it because you guys deserve more exposure and this is a step in the right direction, if you can keep providing great content and expanding and getting better and better. My thing is what the hell happened to WES??? WES didnt want to sellout? or what? You guys should make up, if theres a prob and bring him on board! Hes a legend in the game too!

Got something to say?
