Farewell Stage6

RIP DivX Stage6Stage6, a high quality streaming video platform and social network, died on February 28, 2008. It was in beta and lived in San Diego, CA.

The cause was funding, employee Tom, aka Spinner said.

Born in 2006 by parent DivX, Inc. Stage6 spent most of its life differentiating itself from similar video sharing sites like YouTube. Stage6 accepted DivX or Xvid files up to 1080p, equivalent to BluRay.

In July 2007 DivX announced it was seeking to separate Stage6 from the rest of the company. Co-Founder and Executive Chainman Jordan Greenhall was to switch from role of DivX CEO to manage the separating Stage6.

Then in early February 2008 Stage6 was hacked, its front page redirecting to shock images. Within hours a site maintenance notice was put up by the Stage6 team. Service was restored the following day with uploads temporarily disabled. Several login credentials were accessed by the attackers, many of which were posted on 4chan’s /b/ forum.

Despite Stage6’s popularity with independent content creators, the fansub scene, and retro cartoon aficionados the site’s enormous demand for attention and resources could not be provided.

Stage6 is survived by DivX Certified devices and DivX Connected.

    But I guess Vuze will get more attention now that their only other “major” high quality streaming site has gone (we can’t exactly call Youtube high quality can we :P)

    Poor Stage6 :(
    I was considering switching over to it from Google Video, but now I guess that idea wen’t poof.

    wow, that really bites the big one…personally I enjoyed Stage6 the video quality was superb…bahffls.

    All hope is not lost just yet. Most of the uploaders from Stage6 went to Veoh. Try there for your favorites…

    i was a frequent visitor too.. :(
    now where can i get my fix of high quality video pod casts? :sobs:
    but hey : vimeo, blip.tv, dailymotion HD.. dont forget them too..
    i hate veoh coz downllading videos are slow.. and u neeeeeddd an account to
    watch full length >.<

    I loved the high quality DIVX Videos, i used to watch bleach there.. meh

    I’m pretty sure they went under for all the pirated content on their servers…. QSS ALWAYS linked to them, and their movies/codec drove/still drive a good portion of the scene. Long live a decent codec….

    Ahh dang!!!
    I had most of the Hak.5 clips embedded in my site, so peeps who wouldnt know about this site… would!!!
    UTube quality is.. for lack of a better description… FUGGED!!!
    And then there’s Veoh!!! Dont get me started!! lol
    Well.. Looks like I have a HEAP of clips to remove :-\
    Unless theyre on another decent quality site..
    Im off to check out dailymotion.
